Toby began his career as a law costs draftsman in 1992 at a small firm in Southampton. He went on to hold senior positions in leading costs firms in London and the South East before establishing TMC in 2005.
He became an Associate of the Association of Law Costs Draftsmen (now the Association of Costs Lawyers) in 2000, a Fellow in 2002, and in 2007 was among the first Fellows to obtain higher rights and the title Costs Lawyer.
Toby has acted in several high-profile cases. He was instructe d by the Claimant’s solicitor in the Supreme Court case *Smith and others v MOD* (the “Snatch Land Rover” case) and in *Roach v Home Office*, the leading authority on inquest costs recovery. He has also worked on claims arising from the undercover policing litigation and is regularly instructed in some of the UK’s highest-value clinical negligence matters.
Tom is a Senior Costs Lawyer with over 25 years’ experience in civil and commercial litigation. He has prepared bills and represented clients at assessment in courts up to and including the Supreme Court, as well as in the Land, Tax and Employment Tribunals.
He specialises in high-value and complex clinical negligence, professional negligence and civil liberties cases, including HRA claims against the police, MOJ, MOD and the Home Office. Since the Jackson reforms, Tom has focused on costs budgeting. He regularly prepares and defends Precedent H budgets in complex multi-track cases and attends CCMCs when required.
In addition, Tom was a key designer of the ACL’s electronic bill and has given talks on its implementation since it became mandatory.
Joanna qualified as a solicitor in 1995 and specialised in personal injury and clinical negligence matters. In 2005 she moved into costing. She joined TMC in 2008 and now specialises in inter partes billing and negotiation, mainly in relation to personal injury, clinical negligence and civil liberties matters.
Tracy has worked in the law industry for over 30 years, initially as a Legal Secretary for a Matrimonial Solicitor and thereafter as a Legal Secretary to a Senior Partner of a High Profile Law Firm dealing with personal injury claims. Tracy went on to manage the Road Traffic Accident Department, her role included the consideration of claims through to issue of proceedings. Tracy has worked specifically in relation to costs for in excess of 17 years, specialising in inter-partes billing and negotiation, mainly in relation to personal injury, clinical negligence, housing and civil liberties matters.
Julie joined TMC in 2018, having run her own legal costing firm with her husband since 2002. Her specialism is in legal aid billing, including private law family and public law cases, immigration, housing, community care and actions against the police and other public bodies.
